First Friday Gearing Up for Fall 2015

First Friday Gearing Up for Fall 2015

Hello, and welcome to First Friday Denton. This event was created in 2010, and is still going strong all these years later. Yes, it seems like the wink of an eye ago – that I started this event, yet at the five year mark, it is time for me to step back from managing this event and let some fresh people with fresh energy and ideas take the lead in behalf of this event.

I recently sat down with Julie Glover and Christine Gossett to talk with them about the viability of First Friday Denton, and the medical necessity of stepping back from this event so that it will have people who will promote and support it well into the future. They are now an integral and vital part of First Friday Denton. They both expressed their support for the event, and you can believe that the changes they make will be for the betterment of First Friday Denton.

I truly believe one of the benefits of First Friday Denton is the fact that it came from the people, from merchants with an overwhelming desire to succeed in the tough business of retail in a creative community that is Denton, Texas. Robin Huttash, who owns A Creative Art Studio, is a prime example of an artist who knows how to wear the business “hat” and leverage First Friday Denton’s free publicity and organization to the fullest. She has always been involved and a hardcore supporter of this event.

And that’s why you will find Robin Huttash (“the civilian”) in charge of First Friday Denton (FFD) going forward. She’s the voice from the streets of Denton, the artist and business-person with savvy and experience in marketing First Friday Denton and her own business. For you Downtown Denton retailers who have yet to get involved with FFD, Robin is a great contact. Last spring Robin’s business did take a huge hit when a fire above her business caused significant damage to her business below. Nevertheless, they are on the rebuild, and we’re all anxious to see what comes from the new beginning of A Creative Art Studio in Denton, Texas.

As I said, medical necessity takes me away from FFD, but I am far from gone. Don’t be surprised to see me wandering through venues on any given First Friday, shooting photos and video of the event. I would be lying if I said I am not proud of the event and its successes. I am extremely happy to leave this event in capable and energetic hands of Robin Huttash, Julie Glover and Christine Gossett.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I will remain on board as the person behind the curtain, dealing with the running of this website and passing information back-and-forth as needed.

First Friday Expected to Be Dry and Busy as Summer Kicks In

First Friday Expected to Be Dry and Busy as Summer Kicks In

Say goodbye to the Texas Floods, and hello to huge crowds this First Friday in Denton, Texas!

After almost a solid month of rain, we’re drying out just in time for the first First Friday of summer 2015. Denton was known for summers that are a bit more laid back than the seasons during university school years, but nowadays with all the activities around Downtown Denton, the students living in Denton year-round, the slower pace is hardly noticeable as it used to be.

First Friday Denton is the original event created to highlight Denton businesses that cater to people interested in the things that make Denton unique – art, music, food, artisans and entertainment of all sorts.

Please join us this Friday, June 5 from 5:30-7:30 for our public reception for Life Through the Lens: Pictures That Tell a Story by Joe Clark and Junebug Clark. We will remain open until 9pm for First Friday Denton Texas. Events are free and open to the public. Hope to see you there!

Join us for First Friday Denton this Friday, May 1st, 7 – 9 pm.

Come hear the sounds of Steve Horn and Leon Peek. They will be performing behind the studio in our “backyard”. We will have a fun community art project, refreshments and some shopping. As you know, there was a fire in the apartment above our gallery on March 15th and at this time we are still waiting for repairs to be completed. We are thinking that we will be back in our building by June but hoping it will be in May. Hope you can join us for our outdoor event.

I just received this nice video from Christopher Schlumpf who has the website “Everyone’s a Story,” and I thought it did a very good job of shouting out the secret that is Denton, Texas.

We will be announcing an open meeting for those interested in having input into the direction of First Friday Denton, as well as a simple meet and greet for those wondering just exactly what First Friday Denton is all about and who is behind “the digital curtain.” Stay tuned!

Vigne News For July 2014

From John Ryan at Vigne:

vigne wine shop denton texasBecause the 4th is on a Friday this year we are pushing the wine club wine tasting to next weekend, the 10th -12th . This evening andSaturday, from 6:00-8:00pm our wine tasting has been selected especially for the holiday weekend. Street and Parking lot reconstruction will continue through December. This week they have shut down the parking lot closest to Wells Fargo. As an alternative the city has striped the lot by the old tax office between Oak and McKinney by Oakland St. This lot is only 1-1/2 blocks from Vigne and generally does not fill up until late in the evening.

We have made several changes to our “by the glass” list, several new ports and our First Class Flight is now three great Cabernets.

When Hoochie’s opens (mid-July) they will be an addition to our list of local restaurants that deliver to Vigne. Currently Andaman, Mellow Mushroom and Rusty Taco deliver. Gold Mine BBQ has minimum order to delivery. We also have menus from Queenie’s and Rooster’s both of whom currently only do “pickup” orders, but we are working on them.

Be sure and like us on Facebook. We post our weekend tastings on Facebook ever week but try to limit ourselves to not more than two emails a month.

 The basics:

With 29 wines and ports available by the glass (33-35 Thursday through Saturday) and 8 to 10 wine and port flights, we have something for everyone’s taste, and ranging from $4 to $22 something for everyone’s pocketbook. For the beer drinkers in your group we have 4 on tap and 7 bottle selections.

Our “Last Bottle Sale”, discounts 20-50% off, has sold out but we will be picking several selections to start it back up next week.

Every day we feature a “Wine of the day” which is happy hour price all day.
